CPF Processing Times for Foreigners

How long does it actually take to get a CPF in Brazil as a foreigner? A realistic breakdown by application method, including what causes delays and the total time from start to CPF in hand.

Quick Answer

In Brazil in person: same day to 10 business days. Via consulate: 2-8 weeks. Via authorized representative (remote): 5-14 business days after submission. Total time from start including document preparation: 3-6 weeks for a well-prepared remote application.

Processing Times by Method

Online or In Person in Brazil

Receita Federal Processing

Same day - 10 business days

Total (Start to Finish)

1-10 business days

Fastest option. Valid passport and legal entry proof required. Available at Receita Federal offices, Banco do Brasil, Correios and online via the Receita Federal website.

Via Brazilian Consulate Abroad

Receita Federal Processing

2-8 weeks

Total (Start to Finish)

3-10 weeks total

Requires a consulate visit. Availability varies by country. Not all consulates process CPF applications for non-Brazilian nationals.

Via Authorized Representative (Power of Attorney)

Receita Federal Processing

5-14 business days after submission

Total (Start to Finish)

3-6 weeks (incl. document prep)

Fully remote. Requires notarized and apostilled POA with correct wording and certified Portuguese translation. <Link to="/cpf-power-of-attorney" className="text-[#0B6B3A] hover:underline font-medium">See the POA guide for details.</Link>

All times are estimates. Final processing is at the discretion of the Receita Federal. Note: a newly issued CPF typically takes approximately 2 weeks to become fully active in all systems.

What Causes Delays

In almost all cases, delays are caused by document errors before submission - not by Receita Federal processing times.

Missing or incorrect documents

Application rejected; documents must be corrected and resubmitted. Adds 2-6 weeks. This is the most common cause of rejection - not POA wording.

Missing apostille

Application rejected. Apostille must be obtained and document resubmitted.

Proof of address older than 90 days

By the time the apostille arrives, address proof may have expired. Plan timing carefully.

Missing certified translation

Documents without a tradutor juramentado translation are rejected.

Receita Federal processing backlog

Occasional delays beyond 11 business days. Outside your control.
